This 400 mm G Master prime combines high image quality with advanced autofocus for handheld super-telephoto photography. Paired with a compact E-mount camera body, it creates a balanced, mobile system for capturing detailed images of wildlife, sports, and trains.
Weighing 994 g (35.1 oz.) without the tripod foot and measuring 242 mm (9-1/2 in.) long, the lens is designed for portable, comfortable handheld use. Its G Master optics and mechanical design combine low weight with smooth handling to help reduce fatigue while maintaining high image quality.
• Sony identifies it as the world’s lightest in its surveyed category as of the September 2026 announcement: full-frame super-telephoto lenses covering 400 mm with a maximum aperture of F4.5 or faster. The comparison excludes the tripod foot.
Super ED (Extra-low Dispersion) and ED glass elements minimize aberrations to support high resolution and corner-to-corner sharpness. Sony’s Nano AR Coating II suppresses flare and ghosting, helping preserve clarity and contrast when shooting backlit scenes.
• An 11-blade circular aperture and individually optimized spherical aberration help create smooth, creamy bokeh.
• Supports Sony SEL14TC and SEL20TC teleconverters; consult Sony’s support information for camera-body compatibility.
• Function Ring assignments depend on the camera. Consult the camera’s Help Guide for available functions; when some functions are unavailable, Power Focus is assigned by default.
