Sigma 85mm F1.2 DG Art Lens (Sony E)

The Sigma 85mm F1.2 DG Art is a full-frame, medium-telephoto prime lens offered here for Sony E. Its 85mm focal length and bright F1.2 maximum aperture combine portrait-length framing with strong background separation and low-light capability. Designed to retain fine detail at its widest aperture, it serves studio portraits, weddings, fashion photography, and cinematic video production.

A 17-element, 12-group optical design uses two SLD elements, three aspherical elements, and glass with high anomalous dispersion. These materials address the axial chromatic aberration associated with large apertures, while the aspherical elements also correct spherical aberration and sagittal coma flare. The design emphasizes high resolving power at F1.2 so that fine expressions and textures remain clearly rendered in photographs and video.

The combination of an 85mm focal length and F1.2 aperture creates a very shallow depth of field with pronounced background blur. A rounded, 13-blade diaphragm helps out-of-focus highlights remain nearly circular as the aperture is stopped down. The bokeh rendering also suppresses color bleeding and double-line outlines, helping separate the subject from its surroundings without distracting background artifacts.

Flare and ghosting are addressed through optical simulations that consider different incident-light conditions. Sigma's Advanced Amorphous Coating adds a low-refractive-index amorphous layer to reduce internal reflections. Together, these measures help preserve clarity and contrast, including when shooting against the light.

Portability is supported by a focus-group layout that uses aspherical elements to reduce the number of elements in the focusing unit. A compact mechanical design accommodates a floating mechanism without abandoning the lens's emphasis on mobility. The Sony E version weighs 905g / 31.9 oz., making the large F1.2 aperture more practical for extended shoots and work that requires frequent movement.

Dual HLA autofocus provides fast, quiet focusing and subject tracking for both stills and video, including at the shallow depth of field produced by F1.2. HLA stands for High-response Linear Actuator: Sigma's linear motor drives the focusing lens directly rather than through gears or other intermediate mechanical parts, supporting quiet, precise autofocus operation.

Focus-group positioning and aspherical surface design are optimized to reduce focus breathing. By limiting changes in the angle of view as focus moves, the lens helps recorded focus transitions look more natural instead of visibly changing the framing.

The Art-line construction combines precision-made components with lightweight, high-strength materials to balance rigidity, durability, and portability. These materials include TSC, or Thermally Stable Composite, a polycarbonate whose thermal expansion rate is similar to aluminum. Its compatibility with metal components supports precise assembly while keeping the lens suitable for mobile shooting.

Dust- and splash-resistant construction is paired with a water- and oil-repellent coating on the front lens surface. The coating makes water easier to wipe away and helps prevent oils and grease from adhering, simplifying cleaning in demanding conditions. The lens is not waterproof: avoid heavy splashing, because water entering the lens can cause major damage that may not be repairable.

• • AFL controls in two locations can be assigned different functions through the menus of selected cameras. • A physical focus-mode switch lets you select autofocus or manual focus directly on the lens.
• • The aperture ring provides direct manual aperture control and an automatic setting. • A click/de-click switch allows either stepped aperture operation or click-free adjustment, particularly useful for seamless aperture changes during video recording.

The aperture-ring lock helps prevent unintended changes between automatic and manual aperture operation. Engaging it at A holds the ring at A. Engaging it elsewhere keeps adjustment within the range from maximum to minimum aperture and prevents the ring from turning to A.

• • Aperture range: f/1.2 to f/16. • Minimum focusing distance: 84cm / 33.1 in. • Maximum magnification ratio: 1:8.9. • An 82mm front filter thread accepts filters directly.
• • Each individual lens is checked using Sigma's proprietary MTF measurement system. • Sigma's Mount Conversion Service is available for this lens.

As the medium-telephoto member of Sigma's F1.2 Art lineup, this lens joins the 35mm F1.2 DG II Art and 50mm F1.2 DG DN Art. The three lenses extend the lineup's emphasis on shallow depth of field and smooth bokeh across wide-angle, standard, and medium-telephoto focal lengths.
